Drive
This was a very ambitious project for me and, after two years in the creative process, I am happy to finally present the results!
It all began with the idea of integrating the frame, which is normally a geometric form, as a tool to create an extra dimension
of expression. This concept originated earlier with my cirque series with its round frames and soon after I came upon the idea
of using the shapes of cars as a metaphor for "the journey of life." The human bodies, together with their colours and position,
are for me an expression of individuality but, taken together, are all part of a larger group within the shape of the car.
I hope that each form, in its uniqueness, and the way they relate to each
other, can inspire us to be more aware of ourselves and our relationship
to all of mankind. I think every person is able to categorize his or her
relations into these metaphoric cars. The different car models were chosen
as symbols as well, reflecting change over time.
In each work I tried to integrate different materials as metaphorical
elements even though this is not always immediately obvious. The pieces
of mirror on "Car of C" for example, together with the leather pieces
on the human figures, form two reptiles. They are frightening with their
teeth and spikes. I used the mirror as a way to include external reflections
in the work, symbolizing a violent collusion in the physical world (action-reaction)
as well as a more subtle and psychological confrontation with our own
inner selves. The leather worked into the clothes represent the "second
skin" we sometimes wear as means to insulate ourselves from the world
around us. I tried to include these kinds of details representing all different
things in all of the cars. You can see and try to find out for your selves.
The airplane might be seen as an allegory to a journey in wich we, and
all of the people we have ever known, come together to seek a new way to
move or fly beyond ourselves.
The slideshow is a humorful reference to my metamorphosis from "circus master" to driver after completing this series.
